Early Engineer at Successful Company

Instead of buying a nice watch or a super car, rich people in Silicon Valley will flaunt either their title, such as early engineer at Twitter or their star investors, such as Andreessen Horowitz, because it implies they have a lot of money.

Tim: Why do you always introduce yourself as an early employee at Facebook. Isn't that a little pretentious?
David: But.. but I drive a Prius.. and I'm wearing a plain t-shirt.

    Humorification

Like gamification except you add elements of humor to your product to make it more interesting and engaging.

Tim: What does Agile mean? I hate reading dictionaries I feel like I'm back in college.
    Chris: http://svdictionary.com/words/agile
Tim: Wow that's amazing. I'm going to visit this site everyday

      Backlink

A backlink is an inbound link to a webpage. Search engine rankings are heavily based on the number of quality backlinks a webpage has because it is a signal of popularity and importance. Anchor text is the descriptive label of a backlink and determines how relevant the link is to a web page.

This is a backlink to Google with anchor text "Google"

        The Founder Industrial Complex

Describes the institution of increasing the number of founders (and new companies) in a given area to increase spending on early stage services that venture capitalists already fund.

In order to take advantage of this founder industrial complex, we're using our VC money to create a web-tool that instantly sets up a splash page for 10$ a month to capitalize on the increase of incorporated startups in this area.

          Soylent Diet

Refers to the diet of busy entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley. Instead of eating like normal human beings these entrepreneurs drink Soylent, a powered meal replacement, because it is more efficient than chewing and using knife and fork.

Check out this New York Times article for more about this interesting phenomenon.

Matthew: Wow have you heard of Soylent? It will allow me to work throughout the day without wasting any time to eat like these foodies out here. I only wish it came in a backpack so I could attach a feeding tube between it and my stomach and have it on the go.

            Jared

A forgettable person. Often boring but quite intelligent, but usually so socially awkward that a person's mind will naturally attempt to suppress any memory of interactions with 'Jared'. This further contributes to Jared's forgettability.

Bill: "Jared, what's the status of the new payments module?"
Jared: "My name is David.. and the module is finished, daily revenue is up by 86% "
Bill: "Really? that's great! thanks Jared I'll let everyone know."

                Web Developer / Programmer

The distinction between a web developer/programmer and software engineer is that a software engineer generally has a theoretical CS education and is knowledgable in the areas of algorithms, data structures and architecture whereas a web developer/programmer simply knows how to program. At this point the line is pretty blurry but some engineers like the distinction so they can feel better about themselves.

Tim: Look at that idiot over there. He doesn't know anything about algorithms and he didn't even go to college.
David: Sure but isn't what he does day to day exactly what you do.
Tim: Yes but I went to MIT

                  Prorata Rights

Prorata investment rights give investors the right to invest in a startup’s future fund-raising rounds and maintain their ownership percentage in the company as the company grows and raises more capital.

Erlich kept his Prorata Investment Rights in Grindr allowing him to keep his 10% share as more investors started also investing their money on the application.

                    Delaware C-Corp

The widely accepted incorporation structure in Silicon Valley. It allows the most flexibility for entrepreneurs and investors putting their money in newer tech driven companies.

Aref was so disgusted by our Florida LLC incorporation that he decided to pull his money out of our company based on sheer incompetence. I was able to win him over by telling him that Facebook once made the same mistake.

                      Failing Up

When obviously incompetent, uninspired, or undeserving employees are promoted, even when they openly fail for all to see. Inexplicably, this often occurs at the exact same time others around them are busting their ass to deliver for the company.

Just relax - the dumber you are, the better you'll do.

Person A: "How did Matt get that promotion? The guy hasn't written a line of meaningful code in over 6 months, all he does is write IRC robots that display cheesy GIFs when people are chatting about the size, shape, or length of something."

Person B: "I know, he's failing up - I only wish I had it in me to be so carefree and incompetent."

                        Bug

A bug is a flaw in software that causes an unintended result. Most bugs arise from errors in written code, rather than from a computer itself. Due to the prevalence of engineer-created bugs, some programmers sardonically refer to their bugs as "surprise features".

Albert: Is there a bug in your code? I can't log into my account.
Justin: That's a feature. The site is telling you to go outside and take walk.

                          San Francisco

The city of San Francisco is one the most famous cities in the Bay Area, home to the SF Giants, hipsters, a thriving LGBT community, and enough fog to make you consider suicide, commonly referred to as "The City". When non Bay Area natives talk about the Bay Area, they're either talking about SF or Silicon Valley.

Alex: Yo man, you doing something later? It's Friday.
Kim: Yea I'm thinking about heading to The City later for some drinks, probably near Nob Hill or something.
Alex: Sounds chill. Can I come?
Kim: I don't know if it's your scene. The place has pretty hipster bars. They all have PBR on tap for $5 a pint.

A voting ring is when you get people you know to upvote things for you on popular websites that use upvotes such as Hacker News and Reddit rather than waiting for organic upvotes. This is done to game the ranking algorithms of these websites and make your content appear at the top so others are able to see it.

Wow. I got shadow banned from Reddit when I got caught in a voting ring as a result of asking everyone I know on Facebook to upvote my post.
